Brain Procurements

Some patients diagnosed with certain types of seizure disorders, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease or other neurodegenerative disorders have been enrolled in university and/or hospital brain research programs. These patients have authorized donation of their brain to science for research purposes after death however, there are time limits for removing the brain for donation (usually within 12 hours after death) and very limited agencies with the skills, equipment, and willingness to assist with procurement of the patient's brain. The coroner's office has assisted with procuring many brains and shipping them to research hospitals and/or universities to fulfill the decedent's and/or surviving family member's request.
